ENGLISH:

Origin:

The pocket square is an accessory introduced in the male fashion during the early twentieth century. A very popular item in the 20s, it was worn along with a suit vest and a fedora hat. The handkerchief has an older history, though, more precisely 600 years. It is said that the handkerchief was invented by Richard II of England ((1367-1400) who defined it as „a piece of cloth for the king to clean his nose”. Originally used by the nobility, by the 17th century it came to be used by all social classes.

Initially, handkerchiefs were placed in the trousers pockets, since nobody wanted to show their used handkerchief. In the 19th century, together with the introducing of the two pieces suit, gentlemen started to use two handkerchieves: a clean one for the breast pocket and a used one for the trousers’pocket. As you expect, after use, the pocket square was moved in the trousers’ pocket. The pocket square was also a way of men exercising their gallantry, offering it to their female partners, when needed.

Since the 20s, the pocket square became a beauty accessory, ceasing to be used for...dirty reasons.

The pocket square as an accessory

The pocket square is one of the few accessories a man is allowed to wear. Hardly visible and apparently modest, it makes the difference between a conformist and an original outfit. It says a lot about the one wearing it, depending on the colour chosen or the folding style. First of all, a conformist would never call to a silk pocket square, as he will find it too bold. This accessory is actually a declaration of originality and self- confidence. Therefore, if you like to express yourself through outfits, do not hesitate to call to the pocket square to make the difference!

The pocket square cand also save a plain outfit. Imagine a dark suit with a white or navy blue shirt and there you have a bussiness outfit. If you add a monochrome or a plaid pocket square, your outfit will gain glow and individuality without an excessive effort. A new suit is a big investment and most men have two or three suits. Learn to bring them to life by this cheap, simple and elegant trick!

The silk pocket square

If this is your option, choose only natural silk, as polyester looks cheap and it will compromise your look. An important rule is not choosing the same colour and pattern for both tie and pocket square.

You can match the pocket square with the tie, but it’s not mandatory as you can also match it with your socks or shirt. If you choose matching it with your tie, make sure the two items have no more than two shades in common. You can also choose matching them tone on tone, i.e. combining two shades of the same colour.

If you pick the same colour, you can choose different patterns and textures.

Ciprian Vrabie invites you to discover the glamour of silk pocket squares, through a wide range of products in bright colors and bold patterns, some of them Romanian folk-inspired.

Now you know a little about pocket squares, so you can start your journey, learning to personalize your suits. Your efforts will be rewarded when you stand out without investing a lot of money in a new suit.
